'Optimum PhytoBrightner Triple Action Illuminating Black Moisturiser'

I was in the market for a new moisturiser recently and since I am now in the age bracket for 'anti-aging' products, I knew I needed to invest in an all-round cream that will benefit my "advancing" facial skincare needs.

Behold - a black moisturiser!

This is a Superdrug own brand called "Optimum" - 'PhytoBrightner Triple Action Illuminating Black Moisturiser 50ml'

Yes, it sounds weird that a moisturiser has a black colour rather than the traditional white/translucent look that is customary with the majority of creams that are on the beauty shelves.

However, gimmick or not, the unusual colour is what caught my eyes when I saw this tub in Superdrug.

It claims to "Visibly reduces age spots and discolouration, Defends against further skin pigmentation and Boosts complexion radiance"

Now, as a pale skinned gal, I have dabbled in creams in the last few years to help even out my skintone, as any redness or discolouration shows very visibly on my complexion - so i was sold on the product specification.

I have been using this moisturiser for nearly 2 weeks now, had initially used it in the morning, but within the first few days I noticed that it is a very hard to blend cream in. If you do not quickly (And I mean VERY QUICKLY!) blend this thoroughly into your skin, you will tend to find the black consistency clings to dry areas and becomes harder to work with. Not something that's handy if you are getting ready in a rush! But don't worry - it does not stain your skin and the black does melt away completely if you apply it properly.

It has a gel consistency, although light to the touch, it does feel heavy on the skin and for under makeup, I found this to make my foundation slide and I became more oily as the day progressed. So, I started to use it as a nightcream now and can begin to see the benefits better.

My skin feels very hydrated - even in the morning after it being on my face for 12+ hours, it still feels slightly tacky in a good way. I have also noticed that my skintone is less red and previous acne scarring has somewhat faded.

There is a con though...it smells horrible!Almost medicinal mixed with a heavy floral scent (It does fade after an hour though).

But a good pro to having a moisturiser with a black colour is that it allows you to visibly see where you are actually rubbing it. When I first applied it - I did it blindly. Once I opened my eyes, I saw that I had not rubbed it in certain areas of my face and not well enough either. So this cream has taught me how to effectively apply moisturiser!

I would recommend this moisturiser - but would highly suggest opting to use it in your night time beauty regime to reap all the benefits.

It is normally priced for £12.99 - Available online at Superdrug
